BinLogic Beta - PHC adjustment based on time

Looking at all the machine data that we are receiving from the BinLogic the first thing that jumps out is how varied the PHC time is:

I see machines where the PHC turns off within 5-10 seconds of the HGV coming ON and some where it takes over a minute.

(You can compute the same by taking the duration between harvests, deducting 7 minutes for the make cycle and 30 seconds for post PHC to get the amount of time your PHC stayed ON.)

There are no major differences in the settings between the machines taking into account the R404 vs R22 settings.

I am now adjusting my machines to reduce the PHC cutoff pressure to where it turns off soon after the ice drops. Note, the BinLogic adds 30 seconds for good measure after the PHC turns OFF.

A difference of 20 seconds per cycle results in about 250 lbs more of ice every 24 hours. Mark has adjusted one of his machines - simply based on the time it takes for the ice to fall off after running cleaner through and saw a 20 second difference.

It will need to be seen if the same setting works for cold weather - I suspect it will.

In discussions with folks who are familiar with ice machines what I understood was that:
  • The amount of time it takes for the pressure to rise to the PHC cut off will vary based on ambient temperature and weather conditions. I expect it to increase as temps drop.
  • The PHC valves themselves are not accurate - they are often not calibrated and the dial setting does not corresponding to the actual pressure readings
  • The PHC valves are not reliable and are themselves susceptible to changes in ambient conditions.
